New Year's Eve

It's almost 2006, one final post before the new year. I could make it a New Year's resolution to blog more, but that may be deathly boring to most folks :-)

The weather here has been too nice, I sometimes feel sorry for all those snowbirds, but, it's not like they have to live where they do :-). The bad part though is the very dry conditions which have led to numerous grass fires, the city and county have banned fireworks, although, I'm sure, we will still hear plenty go off tonite.

I'm still not back riding the bike, a bit disappointed in that, but something I need to deal with. I'm giving myself some more time, I'm sure things will come around, and I will be riding soon, perhaps sooner than I expect (I can hope!). The new bike looks a bit forlorn, I think it wants to be ridden :-). I should have the bike computer by the middle of next week, and thus, can get some measurements on how far I've been riding.

Hopefully, 2006 will be a great year for everyone. Smile, be happy!

Small additions around the blog

I added some new links to around the page, to display a 'Quote of the Day'. Seems to work ok. It does require JavaScript, so you will need to enable it for my blog to see the quotes.

I'm back!

It's been a little while since the last blog. There were some personal issues which interferred with me blogging, but those are over.

The football team did not make it past the 2nd round of the playoffs. They nearly made an impossible comeback but fell just short at the end of the game. Still, a very exciting game.

Another local area team, the Hutto Hippos made it to the State Final in class 3A. Unfortuneately, they lost a back and forth game. It's pretty tough to make it to the finals and not win. They did beat the #1 ranked 3A team on the way to the finals though, quite an accomplishment.

I have a new bike, we will see if this improves or changes my riding habits. I intend to get a bike computer, mostly to get a better measurement of the distance travelled. Alot of my normal riding is on hike & bike trails which have not distance markings, so I'm pretty much guessing how far I'm riding. At least with a computer, I will have a more or less accurate measurement. A good Xmas present for myself.

How the mighty have fallen

The PHS football team accomplished a mighty task yesterday, beating the local area powerhouse Westlake Chapperalls two years in a row in the first round of the playoffs. It was a very exciting game with no lead large enough. A short summary of the game can be found here and you can listen to a replay of the game here. Pville is playing A & M Consolidated next week, a team they've had problems with in the past. However, they looked much sharper and crisper this week compared to the bad outing last Friday. If they play just as well next week, they will have a very good chance of winning.

There was a dedication of the Fallen Warrior Memorial yesterday down at Pfluger Park, Veteran's Day. It's in the central part of the park, right on the hike and bike trail. They did a very nice job with the memorial, I encourage you to look thru the site and remember what brave souls our fighting men and women truely are. Definitely read the speech made at the Ground breaking.

The bike ride was similar to last weekend's, with a pretty strong breeze from the south. I rode a bit further, thru a subdivsion about 1/2 way thru the ride. It probably added another 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile to the ride. It's summer type weather again, with highs up in the 80s, it was in the 70s this morning during the ride, and quite humid. I did dig out my helmut to wear, you can't be too safe. Most of the ride is on the h & b trails, but some is on the roads. Early in the morning, the traffic is quite light, and almost all the roads I ride on are side roads, with minimal traffic.

Another day, another dollar

It's been warm again, way above average, not that I'm complaining much. Still, it is nice to have those 75 degree days. But warm is not hot like it's been for 6 months or so, so it's ok. The leaves are starting to turn on most trees, the warmer weather is probably delaying this some.

The bike rides this weekend went well, pretty warm both mornings, and noticably more humid. I now recognize some people I see on my ride, mostly runners. There were a couple other bicycle riders this morning, wearing 'proper' biking attire. Perhaps I should also get some sometime, but not yet.

So the football team had an underwhelming performance last Friday, perhaps since the game had no significance in terms of placement in the playoffs. They still almost came back, they showed a few moments of excellence, but not many. It appeared the other team wanted it much more than we did. The playoffs start this upcoming week. Pville is hosting the Westlake Chapperalls. I imagine the game will be packed. We beat them at their stadium last year in the 1st round of the playoffs. Beat them soundly. We definitely need a more inspired performance this week, else it will be really ugly.

Went out and bought the remaining two Star Wars movies I did not have, Episode I and III. 'I' is not the best movie, for sure. The fight with the Sith assassin though is very well done. 'III' was pretty instense, I still have issues with Anakin being so easily swayed to dark side. That part seemed to be very weak. All in all though, I enjoyed the movie. I look for the entertainment quality of a movie without being overly analytical, after all, it's just a movie.

So, should I watch all 6 movies in a row one day? Why not :-) I still need to rewatch the LOTR extended versions in one sitting, now that will be a long day!

Been a while, catching up

So it's been a few days since the prior post. So sue me ;-)

I wanted to put some stuff in here about the Pflugerville/Leander football game. Although we lost, it was a very exciting game, decided in the last 15 seconds. Both teams will still make the playoffs, so not all is lost. The last regular season game is tomorrow, we should win, the other team is not doing so well this year.

The weather here has been spectacular, mid 70s to about 80 in the daytime and 50s to 60s at night, by far the best time of the year. We did get an active cold front two days ago with some big thunderstorrms, but that's quite normal and expected. Another front is expected over the weekend, I believe.

I did my normal bike rides over the weekend, although it seems I am going faster now, last ride lasted 50 minutes instead of an hour, so a small improvement. Perhaps I need to add a bit more distance to the ride. It's a bit chilly on the bike early in the morning, maybe that encourages me to ride faster.

The sunsets are occurring sooner now, of course, since Daylight Savings Time has expired, it gives me a chance to see the alpenglow and hour earlier.... ok, not so many mountains in this part of Texas, but very nice colors in any case.

My water heater is OK!

Turns out that newer water heaters must sit in a catch pan of some sort, just in case they leak, so the water can drain without flooding everything. But when the new one was installed (over a year ago), they didn't do that, but they came back when the city failed the inspection, and installed the pan. But it seems it was never inspected again (did they forget to call the city?), until today! And yes, it now passes, geez, I feel so much better now :-)

What else?

Gas has dropped a bit, down to 2.38. I wonder where it will level out. Maybe back to $2? Fat chance...but who knows.

Downloaded the latest Google Earth, perhaps the greatest time waster of ALL TIME. These Google guys are really smart, although they never seem to get anything out of 'beta' :-). Of course, their beta is better than most folks production code.

Another day

It was quite cool this morning, the first real 'cold' front of the year came through yesterday morning. About time I'd say. Supposed to be in the 70s all week.

Back to work today, nothing really out of the ordinary. The usual emails and and such to respond to.

Saw Hurrincane Wilma was pounding Florida this morning, that makes what, 6-8 storms in two years, rather unlucky for the folks in Florida. But hitting more down in the Everglades, I wonder if anyone will make parallels with the 'Invasion' TV show.

Today's bike ride

Today's bike ride started at 7:30, it was a little cold, had to wear some gloves. I did see on TV that it's Lance's Ride for the Roses race today, a very worthy endeavor. I did my usual course, which is about 6 miles or so, down thru the city parks. Alot of the ride is in the shade that early, so it's a bit colder (wind chill, you see). It's a great way to start a day, fresh air, beautiful blue sky.
